What is the best way to structure the bilingual language environment? There is a long-held belief that the one person-one language approach that minimizes language switching and non-native input is ideal when rearing a bilingual child. However, there is little empirical support for this belief. In this talk, I will discuss what we know about the effects of dual-language input and of non-native input on bilingual children’s language performance. I will consider the possibility that the presence of two languages in the input may have distinct consequences for children with weak language skills vs. children with typical language skills. I will conclude by reflecting on how empirical findings align with current language intervention practices.
