Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have increased emotional problems throughout development. The early roots of these difficulties are unknown, but these problems may stem from language difficulties impacting on other aspects of early development. This study looked at the Millennium Cohort Study to investigate the relationship between early risk factors for emotional difficulties, emotional difficulties across childhood, and DLD. A total of 884 children were considered as having DLD at age 5 with 13,344 children within a General Population comparison group. Risk factors were measured at 9 months and 3 years. We found an elevated level of risk factors in children with DLD at both 9 months and 3 years. We also found six distinct subgroups with differing emotional difficulty trajectories from age 3 to 11. Children with DLD were under-represented in subgroups with adaptive trajectories and over-represented in a subgroup with increasing difficulties. The majority of risk factors seemed to predispose children with DLD to a particular trajectory. Peer problems remained more problematic for children with DLD when matched to children with a similar trajectory of difficulties. |
