We compared the efficacy of tele-therapy and in-person therapy for participants in a parent training program for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Thirty-two children with ASD and their parents participated in either In-person therapy (n=17) or Zoom (an online meeting software) therapy (n=15). The therapy included a 6-week training (1-hour session per week) on strategies to improve children’s social and language skills. Each session, clinicians recorded a 10-minute language sample of parent-child interaction, and analyzed children’s mean length of utterances (MLU) and number of different words (NDW). They also reported parents’ applications of the targeted strategies using the fidelity of intervention implementation (FII). We compared changes in children’s MLU and NDW, and parents’ changes on scores of FII. Pilot results showed that the two groups did not differ on MLU and NDW, but also did not show significant changes over time. For FII, In-person group demonstrated steeper increase than Zoom group. Implications of these findings are discussed. The project was supported by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
