Abstract
The goal of this longitudinal study is to examine how children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) communicate with their mothers at 2.5 years of age and 5.5 years of age. Participants in this study included 30 children with ASD and their mothers. Half of the children were preverbal, while the other half were verbal. Multivariate analysis of variance results suggest differences in how verbal and preverbal children are communicating with respect to eye contact and negative affect. For mothers’ in both groups, their communicative behaviors decreased at 5.5 years compared to their communicative behaviors at 2.5 years during this social play context as children increased their communicative behaviors and presumably became more independent.
