Abstract
Parents and other adult caretakers are sources of rich early language input for children. This observational study involved developing a comprehensive list of language stimulation behaviors and constructing a coding system based on that list for the purpose of analyzing mother-child dyadic reading interactions with familiar and unfamiliar stimuli. The children participating in this study were 3-4 years-old. The data from 8 mother-child dyads were analyzed at various levels to reveal both micro and macro-scopic differences in the types and frequencies of occurrence of each of the language stimulation behaviors. Additionally, the language stimulation behaviors were grouped into directive and responsive categories in order to allow for analysis at that level. Contingent lag-1 analysis was used to determine conditional probabilities of various behaviors in the mothers and their children. Preliminary findings suggested that some different patterns and frequencies of behaviors were present when dyads interacted with familiar as compared to unfamiliar stimuli. Additionally, observations were made about the types of contingencies that occurred across the dyads and across stimuli categories.
