Abstract
The development of executive function—the top-down control of thought, action, and emotion—has consequences for children’s behavior in a wide variety of domains, and impairments in executive function have been implicated in numerous disorders with childhood onset. I will present a neurocognitive characterization of executive function and its development that highlights the complex, dynamic interaction between executive function and more bottom-up influences on behavior, such as stress and motivation. The role of language in executive function will be discussed, as will implications for intervention.
