Abstract
Rationale: Early identification of children at risk for language impairment (LI) is a critical first step in providing appropriate language interventions; however, children with LI seem to be under reported in Mexico – 3%-7% (Mexico National Census, 2000). The purpose of this study was to create a language screener for monolingual Spanish-speaking children living in Mexico.
Methods: Two-hundred-fifty children (4 yrs. to 6 yrs.) from central Mexico were administered a grammatical task, a sentence repetition task, and a rapid naming task. Children with LI were identified by a native Mexican speech-pathologist.
Results: Preliminary results indicate significant group mean differences (TD>LI) on the total score of the morphology task and the sentence repetition task. Further, participants with LI were significantly slower than typical peers on the rapid naming task, but there was no differences observed in accuracy. Results will be discussed in terms of the items and tasks that best differentiate between participants with and without LI.
