Abstract
Sentence repetition and cloze tasks that assess morphology can be used for the identification of children with primary language impairment (PLI). However, such tasks require measures to be developed specifically for the target language. The purpose of the study was to develop a sentence repetition and a morphology cloze task for a language screener for 5-to-7 year-old Spanish-speaking (SS) children. Linguistic, cultural and developmental aspects were considered to improve the validity of score interpretations and the screener’s accuracy compared to existing language measures. The study examined bias in the experimental measures in comparison to language-structure tasks of the CELF-4 Spanish, using 307 SS children with and without PLI. Configural and metric invariance across groups were assessed using a multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis. Results suggest measurement bias for the subtests of CELF-4 Spanish but not for the experimental measures. Equivalent loadings and intercepts across groups for the experimental tasks indicate that between-group differences in test scores related to differences in language-structure skills and not to measurement artifacts or bias.
