The to-infinitive is one of the first complex syntax forms produced. Infinitive-to omissions are omitted by typically developing children, and children with SLI typically omit TO with greater frequency than typically-developing peers. The current study involves a detailed analysis of infinitive omission errors in typically developing children between the ages of 3;0 to 4;11. The analysis was based on 1433 language transcripts from the CHILDES database. Specific areas of interest included overall error rates, the matrix and infinitive verbs associated with TO omission errors, and the specific sentence structures associated with TO omission errors. Results and implications for theories of grammatical development will be discussed.
