Abstract
Voicing contrasts in Taiwanese word-initial stops are investigated. This study based on the same methodology as the paidologos project (a cross-linguistic study of phonological development, Edwards and Beckman, 2003-2008). For this preliminary report, data from six 2 year olds and six 3 year olds were analyzed. Data from 10 adults were also included for comparison. Target consonants were elicited in word-initial positions with color photograph and the associated sound files for children to repeat. Major findings are: 1) Aveolar unaspirated stops have shorter VOTs than bilabial unaspirated stops in adults’ productions. This language-specific pattern is also found in 3 year olds. 2) Aspiration distinction in VOT values is found at 2 years old. 3) Lead VOTs for voiced stops are found in both adults and 3 year olds. 4) The idiosyncratic characteristics are consistently found in the production of voiced stops. Moreover, women tend to use lead VOTs for voiced stops more often.
