Next year, 2009, will be the 30th meeting of the SRCLD. This panel provides a context for thinking about how our understanding of the nature, causes and consequences of child language disorders has - or hasn’t - changed over this time span. (For example, it appears that during the year in which the first SRCLD was being planned, exactly 3 published reports included children with language disorders as research participants, and the phrase “specific language impairment” had not yet entered anyone’s lexicon.) Panelists will describe their perspectives on the differences between then and now in the terminology, perspective, methodologies and scope of research on communication disorders, the advances in knowledge and practice that have been made, and on the questions and challenges that remain. The audience will then be invited to contribute ideas and reactions in an open discussion. We expect a lively exchange on our research progress and needs as well as suggestions on how to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the conference. |
