This study investigates tone acquisition in a hearing-impaired child with early implantation, and compares him with his hearing-normal fraternal twin sister. They were observed at home, once every 2 weeks from the age of 4 months. Sony DAT recorders and AKG wireless microphone were used for data collection. The speech data was then processed through phonetic transcription and acoustic analysis. The speech consisted mainly of natural daily interactions with each other or their mother. The results indicate that the hearing-impaired child produces the high falling tone with the most precision, and correctly produces the high level tone and the high falling tone more frequently than the other tones. The early cochlear implantation has had a positive influence on Subject A, and the child with early implantation acquire tones through the same process as hearing-normal children. |
