Abstract
The purpose of this study was to obtain preliminary data to evaluate the Renfrew Bus Story (RBS) (Cowley & Glasgow, 1994) and a phonological awareness (PA) measure to identify risk for language and/or reading difficulties in Latino bilingual children as screened in English or Spanish. The RBS had the potential to identify children at risk for language impairment but with inadequate specificity. Only 23/73 children with typical language development passed the PA screener, eight of whom were 6 yr olds. For the 4-5 year olds, syllable blending was easiest followed by syllable segmentation, then initial phoneme categorization. For the 6 year olds, initial phoneme categorization was easiest, followed by phoneme blending and deletion. A subgroup of children who failed the PA measure had scores within age norms on the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing and the Test of Phonological Awareness in Spanish. Performance differences appeared to be related to differences across tests and the relatively small sample of items included in the PA screener. Research was supported by a mini-grant from Division 1 of ASHA.
