This study investigated the relationship between early receptive language development and phonological awareness of bilingual children. Participants included typically-developing children of Puerto Rican descent that were recruited from Head Start Programs in Central Pennsylvania. Children’s Spanish and English receptive language abilities were assessed during two years in Head Start and their phonological awareness abilities were evaluated at the end of kindergarten. The trajectories of children’s Spanish and English receptive language development were examined through growth curve modeling. The growth curve models of Spanish and English receptive language abilities in Head Start were then used to determine whether children’s language development during Head Start predicted children’s English phonological awareness outcomes in kindergarten.
