Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the use of Appalachian English (AppE) in the speech of young children and how the amount of AppE impacts language assessment measures such as MLU. We identified 15 non-mainstream patterns in the speech of preschoolers from AppE backgrounds. In addition, the use of their non-mainstream patterns impacted calculation of MLU. Finally, the children who were at later stages of linguistic development had greater rates of AppE dialect use.
