Abstract
This presentation summarizes the results of a randomized clinical trial that compared the language and literacy outcomes of three intervention arms. The study was conducted over three summers for three different cohorts of participants. A total of 216 children (54 per arm) attended 6 weeks of therapy that lasted for one hour and twenty minutes each day. Children were randomly assigned to one of four arms: 1)Fast ForWord-Language; 2)computer-assisted language intervention, which presented seven computer exercises that did not use acoustically modified speech; 3) individual language intervention , in which children received one-on-one, literacy-based language intervention; and (4) a control condition in which children played educational computer games that focused on mathematical calculation, mathematical problem-solving, science, and social studies. Pre-intervention, post-intervention testing and follow up testing 3 and 6 months post-intervention was conducted. The testing periods included formal and informal language tests, literacy tests, and auditory processing measures. The final follow-up data are being analyzed at the time of submission. This study was supported by a grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
