Causal Relationships in the Scripts of Children With and Without Language Impairment

Previous research has shown that two properties (causal connectivity and main causal chain events) of the Causal Network Model (CNM) (Trabasso, Secco & van den Broek, 1984) successfully predict which events children include when retelling narratives. In this study we applied the CNM to the analysis of scripts retold by 46 school-aged children (23 LI, 23 NLI). Causal connections and main causal chain events were identified for C-units in the script and the childrens’ retellings. Results showed that causal connectivity did not influence recall of the script. However, main causal chain events did influence retelling. Children in both groups included proportionally more main C-units than auxiliary C-units in their script retells. Group differences in script retelling were quantitative rather than qualitative.
